Update and St Patrick's Day nails!

Hey guys, remember me? Once again, I fell off the face of the Earth! Or something like that...

Actually, these past few months I have been busy setting up my own indie nail polish brand. I'm so excited!
So, does this mean I'm giving up nail art? No! As soon as I'm done with things like setting up my Etsy store, I will have more time to do my nails. Unless my brand becomes insanely succesfull overnight, which I don't expect ;-)
I won't be posting about my polishes here, so if you want to know more about my brand and take a look behind the scenes, I will be posting links to Instagram, Facebook and the Etsy store as soon as they are up and running.

Mani
Now that that's out of the way, here is another easy mani for you. It was my St Patrick's Day mani. And it didn't work out quite as I had expected =(

For Christmas I got Essie Shake Your $$ Makers. A glorious green in the bottle. But on the nail? It underwhelms.

Shake Your $$ Makers is marketed as a matte neon green. It reminded me of... I don't know. Circuit boards. It's impossible to not have a VNL with this polish. For the mani below, I used four coats. And then I ran out of patience, so I continued with the other nails.

I used: Essie Shake Your $$ Makers, Essence A Piece of Forever, Darling Diva Pot o'Gold, Kiss nail stud.

Thanks for sticking around!

NOTD: As Tomorrow As It Gets

First post of the year, HAPPY 2014 EVERYONE.

Yes, I'm still alive! And yes, I returned from Egypt! But I'm doing some scary exciting stuff that is taking up all of my spare time. However, I managed to squeeze in some NOTD =)

Woohoooo how tanned are my fingers?! =)

I used: OPI Tomorrow Never Dies, OPI Mod About You, Essie As Gold As It Gets

Dramatic Mrs. Santa

Hi pretties!

It's december already, can you believe it?! Time for Christmas-related polishes and nail art.
Since my mother, sister and I will be back in Egypt for Christmas, I won't be doing Christmas nails on the day(s). But now! Here are the first. And YES! My brushes from BornPrettyStore finally arrived. Check my thumb to see my fist experiment using them =)

If you look closely, you will see Let It Glitter! Santa Baby is not just different sizes of red glitter, but also black hearts. I love it! This is two coats.

I used: OPI Alpine Snow, Hema red polish (no name), Essie Licorice, Let It Glitter! Santa Baby.

Halloween NAC Day 3: Things That Go BUMP in The Night

Yeah, I know I'm late again =( I visited my family for a few days so I didn't get around to posting. I will be catching up today (two posts) so I expect to be back on schedule for tomorrow's post. Yay!

Day Three meant Things That Go BUMP in the night. Oh boy. When I googled that phrase, I came across the freakiest link ever. Here it is, if you're up for some scares, goosebumps and stuff.

For this mani I really wanted to try Zom-Body to Love, the glow in the dark polish by OPI that came with the Spookettes set. However, the effect was so weak that I had to change my plans :-( I know the polish is two years old so I was probably expecting too much of it. So here's what I did after the first attempt underwhelmed.
ease halloween nail art
The pic is a bit dull, I'm not sure why.

For the thumb and pinky I did two coats of Darling Diva Cougar followed by two coats of Darling Diva Pot o 'Gold. I added eyes on the thumb but now I think it was too much.
For the pointer finger I did something is saw at Kitty's Painted Claws. I just received Pumpkin Queen by Darling Diva (can you tell I love Darling Diva?!) so I added that over one coat of Essie Licorice, followed by a matte topcoat.
Middle and ring finger are OPI Alpine Snow with DDP Cougar and DDP Pot o 'Gold (middle) Essie Licorice (ring).

So this is my mani for Day Three. I couldn't stop staring at my thumb and pinky! Pot o'Gold is fantastic. It looks just like scales! The gold hexes are holo <3

Halloween NAC Day 2: Pumpkins & Jack O'Lanterns

Day two of the Halloween Nail Art Challenge!

Day two brings us Pumpkins and Jack O'Lanterns. I have so much love for pumpkins <3 We have one of those lights shown above at home. So I was pumped (ha!) to do a mani themed around them!

Pumpinks/Jack O 'Lanterns are orange. Orange is a colour most (normal?) people don't have in their stash. Every year, I 'realise' I don't have an orange polish and panic. Until I actually check my polishes. Ahem.
Oops. Seems I have no shortage of orange polishes ;-)

  • First, I drew circles with Essie Meet Me At Sunset on my nails.
  • Then I took my nail art brush and used OPI He's My Boo (Spookettes set) to make the circles into pumpkins.
  • Then I applied Rimmel Blue Vogue around the pumpkins to make it look like night.
  • Then I used l'Oréal Banana Pop, Essence Get The Fever and Essie Licorice to make it look like there was a light inside the pumpkins. I'm not entirely happy with the effect, but if you don't look so closely (for example if you just look at my nails in real life), it looks alright.
  • Finally I used a nail art brush to apply Miss Sporty Check Matte on top of the Blue Vogue, to give it that satin-y, velvet-y feel dark nights can have.

Yes, I purposely placed my watermark there to camouflage my cuticles ;-)

I really enjoyed this prompt! I'm a bit wary about the next prompt: Things that go BUMP in the night. Well, check back the day after tomorrow to see if I managed to come up with anything!

Halloween Nail Art Challenge: Scary Movies

Helloooo and welcome to prompt one of the Halloween Nail Art Challenge! I know I'm a bit late but I promise Day 2 will be right on time (as in, tomorrow).

Day 1 meant Scary Movies. Yeah. I hate scary movies. They scare me! After asking around a bit and not being happy with any of the suggestions (most people suggested the mask from Scream or intricate designs that I knew I would never be able to do), I knew I needed to think outside the box. So, I went with an Ouija board design! Because, let's face it-  each movie that features an Ouija board teaches us it's Not A Good Idea.

For those of you unfamiliar with Ouija boards, here is an example:
Source: Wikipedia
Fun fact: when researching designs for Ouija boards, I learned that the heart-shaped thingy that moves over the board is called a Planchette. Who knew? Not me.

From Wikipedia:
The Ouija board (WEE-jə) also known as a spirit board or talking board, is a flat board marked with the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0-9, the words "yes", "no", "hello" (occasionally), and "goodbye", along with various symbols and graphics. (....)
It uses a planchette (small heart-shaped piece of wood) or movable indicator to indicate the spirit's message by spelling it out on the board during a séance. Participants place their fingers on the planchette, and it is moved about the board to spell out words. (...)
Mainstream religions and some occultists have associated use of a Ouija board with the concept of demonic possession, and view the use of the board as a spiritual threat and have cautioned their followers not to use a Ouija board.
Despite being criticized by the scientific community and deemed superstitious by traditional Christians, Ouija remains popular among many people.
So. Here is my mani:
Believe me, I will be thrilled when my nail art brushes arrive, hopefully next week. If you look at my pinky finger, you'll know what I mean.
I was expecting the planchette to pop out more as I matted everything else. Unfortunately, no such luck.

I used: The New Black Gold Grenade, OPI German-icure by OPI, Essie Licorice, Miss Sporty matte top coat

I loved this first prompt of the challenge! So exciting do do another challenge and can't wait to see what everyone else has come up with.

Assassin's Creed: Black Flag

Hi pretties! Time for another easy mani.

This wasn't supposed to be an easy mani. As I mentioned in this post, we went to a gaming exhibition last weekend so I really wanted to do an Assassin's Creed: Black Flag mani for the occassion. Because I had next to no time at all, I decided to just paint the logo on my thumb and add some Kiss studs since I hadn't done any mani's with studs recently.
This logo:

Pretty cool, huh? But, there came a moment when the studs were sticking, polish was drying and I realised I was running out of time for the thumbs. Luckily, I remembered this post by Varnished Valkyrie and realised I hadn't used my Nails Inc skulls yet!

So it turned into a bit of a bad ass rock mani rather than a Assassin's Creed-specific mani.
But I tell you, these skulls are great. You can't really tell from the pictures but there are nine Swarovski crystals in the 'forehead' part of the skull. So glam!

I used: nailgirls white #1, Essie Licorice, Nails Inc skull, Kiss studs

World Animal Day

Hi pretties! Did everyone have a good weekend? We went to a gaming exhibition kind of thing (mani to follow), had dinner with friends in a town between where they live and where we live, then ended the night with a pub quiz.

Last Friday was World Animal Day. I hope you were all extra nice to animals around you, maybe you even visited a shelter and/or donated some food or toys? Were you all rocking some cool animal-themed manis?

Here is my World Animal Day mani:
Yeah, the zebra kinda looked weird so I kept going back with my striper only to make it worse. I really liked the frog and tiger print though!

And here's a bonus picture of Ezio. Hey, if you're sick of him yet, just let me know.
He is very interested in our robot vacuum cleaner (Sammie). Here he is waiting until it's time to get vacuuming again. Honestly, this robot is a win-win. The house gets cleaner while I'm doing my nails (bye bye, guilty conscience) and the cat is entertained. I can only recommend it!

I used: Rimmel Aqua Cool, black striper, L'Oréal Colour Riche Banana Pop, Hema orange polish (no name), Rimmel Rain Rain Go Away. l'Oréal Color Riche 404 Scarlet Vamp, l'Oréal Color Riche 401 Rouge Pin up, Essie Licorice, nailgirls white polish, Miss Sporty Matte topcoat

Kings of Leon Nail Art

Hi there!

Maybe you knew from my profile pic, but I am a HUGE Kings of Leon fan. I urge every one of you to go and check out songs OTHER than Use Somebody, Sex on Fire and Notion. I call those the Hellish Trinity because those are the songs everyone knows and every cover band plays. Don't get me wrong, they are great songs but Kings of Leon have so many amazing songs. Wilder, more bad-ass, laden with raw emotion, stuff like that.
And the amazing ballad Arizona which is actually about a beautiful prostitute in a whorehouse in Arizona. I wrote that bit in white as to not offend anyone. Select it with your cursor if you are curious!

I was lucky enough to see them live two years ago, and last weekend I got to see them again <3 They are doing a European tour this summer and played a festival nearby. So of course I had to do Kings of Leon nails! I came up with the idea of using the US cover for Only By The Night quite quickly. However, after some practising I realised I was never going to do this on ten nails. So My Geek helped me with some design suggestions. This is what I ended up with =)

Kings of Leon nail art easy
Kings of Leon nail art <3

For your reference, this is the US album cover:

It's two birds of prey locked in battle. Yeah. Good luck with that. It takes a more talented nail art enthousiast to pull that off.
So I just used polish thinner to get a water colour effect, which unfortunately doesn't really come across on the photograph. Several people noticed and complimented me, though =) The golden circle thingies were like tiny discoballs on my nails <3 The sun really played with them.

Here are two pictures of the evening:

Click to enlarge. I'd like to think Jared (<3) made eye contact here ;-)
Have you ever done your nails as an ode to your favorite band/artist? I'd love to see them!

Nail Fail Friday: Winnie the Pooh

Pretties, it's time for another Nail Fail Friday!

This time it's a Winnie the Pooh fail.
We went to Disney a while ago and of course I had to do my nails =D I checked online for some designs. This design is based on this mani by Polish Art Addiction. Yeah, I didn't do too good a job! As per usual, the problem was my lack of patience. And also time, because I did this in bed just before going to sleep. Come to think of it, these actually turned out quite well considering the circumstances!

I wasn't too pleased, but did some clean up in the car to Disney and rocked these nails anyway =)
The blue is Essie Bikini so Teeny.

Winnie the Pooh mani fail =(
I hope you enjoyed this Fail =)

Baroque Stamping

If you've been checking this blog for a while, you know how stamping makes me feel. Inadequate. Envious. And all that. I still try to make myself think I can do anything as long as I work hard for it and practice, practice, practice. So have I given up stamping? No way Jose.

Here is my latest stamping adventure. A posh baroque design.
The l'Oréal polish stamped so well! I messed the mani up by leaving remover on the plate and then by adding the matte top coat too soon. Oh well.

Barok stamping
I had to take this picture at work so blurred the radiator in the background ;-)

As you can see, I suffered some askew stamping on the pinky finger and index.
The look was what I called 'zombie chic'. That just came to mind when I saw the colours combined and the design itself =)

OT: I'm a bit bummed because Vampirestat is back in my blog statistics =( I hadn't seen them since I added robots.txt but now they're back. Is anyone else seeing the return of referral spam like vampirestat on their blogs?

I used: Essie Miss Fancy Pants, l'Oréal Color Riche 404 Scarlet Vamp, Miss Sporty Check Matte

Silver lining

Pretties,

it's time for some glequin nail art! Of course, this is yet another look perfected by the Nailasaurus.
I'm not even nearly as neat and patient as Sam though!

Spring skies, silver linings...
If you look closely, you will see that the two nails without top coat (pinkie and index) are not quite as dark as the other fingers. Interesting!

I love the holo diamond shaped qlequins but I realized as I was applying them that they were all different sizes =( There was no way I could make a neat grid. So thank you, Essence, for making this mani even harder for me. Grmbl.

The hexes were all perfect. Next time, I will try covering the entire nail with hexes, not visible nail polish. Oh yeah!

NOTD: Black & Gold

Hi,

a quick NOTD: OPI Man With The Golden Gun over Essie Licorice. I haven't regretted buying this insanely expensive top coat yet, it's always a win whether it's over dark or bright colours  <3

Mum's Accent Leopard

First up let me apologize for the quality of the picture. I have been having some trouble with my camera. I hope this will be fixed soon =(

My mum and younger sister visited us a while back =) It was lovely to finally be able to show them were we live. It's a 2,5 hour train journey each way, so unfortunately we don't see each other as often as we would like.
Usually I go to see them and do their nails using their polishes, or maybe I will bring a couple. This time, they had a choice of all my 125 polishes which was a bit overwhelming ;-)

Leopard nail manicure
Mum's new mani
My mum picked Essence Grey-t to be here as a base. It'ss a creamy grey with a pink shimmer. As you can see, the shimmer is real delicate but it did show in real life.

Even before my mum chose a colour I wanted to do a leopard. By doing it as an accent nail, she accepted it without protest =D I hope she kept it for a few days =)

What do you think? Lovely and understated or bland and boring?

I used: Essence Grey-t to be here, Rimmel Grey Matter, Essie Licorice

Valentine NAC Day 10: Inspired

Pretties,

it's Day Ten of the Valentine Nail Art Challenge! Can you believe it's over?

For today the challenge was to do a mani that was inspired by one of the other participants. Wow, it was so hard to pick from all the gorgeous mani's =)

I decided to 'recreate' the Hearts mani from Rachael over at Racho's Nail Love:

Find her mani here.

This is what I made:

I loved how Rachael had struggled with the theme, then managed to find a way to incorporate the hearts into a mani that would still be true to herself. Kudos!
As you can see, I used slightly different colours. Also, my nails are way shorter ;-)

Well. That's it for this challenge. I had so much fun! And just a bit of frustration ;-) Thanks to datyorkLOVES for hosting this challenge =)

Don't forget to check the final entries for this challenge. The link thingy closed, so check out the links at Day 9 for more entries that might have been posted after it closed.

Fancy Studs AT LAST!

Pretties!

How do you feel about 3D nail art, stickers and studs? I love the possibilities and have been looking for studs for absolute ages. Finally I have found a set, in a funky, old-fashioned drug store in our part of town. I am so happy!

I tried them out as soon as we got home. Because they were more pricey that I had hoped, I was really hoping the quality would not be a let-down.
I love to combine bold and neutral, so I went for a greige and gold studs.

Kiss studs stickers nail
Miss Fancy Pants +studs

Close up

Sorry for posting two such similar pictures.

These are the studs. As you can see, they are from the brand Kiss. I have good and bad products from Kiss, this seems to be a winner =)
They are stickers. The edges on the square stood out a bit but I fixed that with top coat.

For this mani I used three coats of Essie Miss Fancy Pants, the studs and two thick coats of Essence Better Than Gel top coat.

And now it's time for a confession: one of my previously posted nail arts was one from the archives. I kept my nails like this for no less than four days! I lost no studs and the polish only chipped on my right thumb <3

Can't wait to use these babies again, get the set if you see it somewhere!

I used: Essie Miss Fancy Pants, Kiss Nail Artist metallics (stickers), Essence Better Than Gel top coat

Miss Fancy Pants vs Soft Chinchilla

So, for Christmas I was lucky enough to get a bottle of Essie Miss Fancy Pants. I really like greys and greiges. Just in the beginning of December I had bought L'Oréal Colour Riche Soft Chinchilla which I used on the final day of the Lazy 15 Challenge. I immediately thought it would be interesting to see how both compare to the other.

So, here's my first ever comparison post =) First up: the bottles:

I was quite suprised to see the name on top of the Essie bottle, as my other Essies have the name on the barcode sticker.

L'Oréal Colour Riche 622 Soft Chinchilla is a true greige, where Miss Fancy Pants is more of a warm grey. They results quite differ from what you would expect from the colours in the bottles!

I tried to take some pictures in different situations because the difference in colour is quite hard to catch sometimes. I had my nails like this for three days and nobody said anything!
The third picture is probably truest. My hands are still quite tanned haha.

So, are they dupes? Certainly not! Are they close enough together that you only need one and can skip the other? Well, that depends on how much you like greys and greiges =) I have both of them now and have no intention on giving one away or *gasp* throwing one out.

Floral One-Stroke

Hello pretties,

Florals. I never do them. I think I did flowers only once before. So this mani was long overdue =)

For Christmas my sister GA Suze got me Essie Head Mistress and Miss Fancy Pants. I wore Head Mistress for a day and I love it. You can never have enough reds <3 But, after a day, plain nails bore me so I needed to spice them up.

I don't know why, but I decided to add flowers. When I gathered my colours, I thought 'hey, why not try this one-stroke technique I read about a while back?'. Yeah. Big fail. But- I didn't feel the mani itself was a fail, so it's not a Nail Fail Friday.

floral abstract nail art
Floral one-stroke

Actually, this picture is true to life- my fingers are still quite tanned from the Egyptian sun.

1. So, I did this art on a 24hrs-old base (two coats) of Head Mistress.
2. Then I placed a drop of white polish on a sheet of plastic.
3. Right next to that, I placed a drop of dark blue polish.
4. I dragged my nail art brush through the middle, so either side would pick up one colour.
5. Then I gently made half circles on my nails, forming flowers. I quickly realised I was doing it wrong/it wasn't working out, but I liked the watercolour-like effect so I decided to continue.
6. I then added Miss Sporty Check Matte.
7. On top of that, I added yellow flower hearts and green leaves/stems. Which means those were shiny when the rest is matte =)
Like I said, I like how it turned out even though it wasn't what I was going for.

Since I had been experiencing some chipping before my vacation, I got Sally Hansen Hard as Nails this weekend. I'm very curious to see if it will improve my nails, as chipping is basically the only problem I have with them. Lucky me =)
I only have some major drama going on around my thumbnail right now, which is slowly healing with the help of creams, oils and overnight band aids.

I used: Essie Head Mistress, Rimmel Blue Vogue, Essence Stampy Polish White, Miss Sporty Check Matte, Cybele (green), Etos (yellow)
