Halloween NAC Day 4: Gothic

Pretties! Second post of the day! Prompt 4 of the Halloween Nail Art Challenge: Gothic. This was pretty difficult, because when I think 'gothic' I think black but there's nothing really nail artsy about black nails.

So. Here's what I came up with as I went:

Base: Nails Inc Tate. My first ever Nails Inc polish. My first ever not-drugstore brand, even. It's quite old but still lush <3
Black: Invogue Black Magic (concrete finish)
Silver: Nails Inc Cambridge Terrace
Matte topcoat on her index finger is not really dramatic, unfortunately

My mum was kind enough to let me do this manicure on her nails. Brave!

Right. That's it for today! Check back tomorrow for Day 5: Trick or Treat. I'm off now to check out the other participants:

Halloween NAC Day 3: Things That Go BUMP in The Night

Yeah, I know I'm late again =( I visited my family for a few days so I didn't get around to posting. I will be catching up today (two posts) so I expect to be back on schedule for tomorrow's post. Yay!

Day Three meant Things That Go BUMP in the night. Oh boy. When I googled that phrase, I came across the freakiest link ever. Here it is, if you're up for some scares, goosebumps and stuff.

For this mani I really wanted to try Zom-Body to Love, the glow in the dark polish by OPI that came with the Spookettes set. However, the effect was so weak that I had to change my plans :-( I know the polish is two years old so I was probably expecting too much of it. So here's what I did after the first attempt underwhelmed.

The pic is a bit dull, I'm not sure why.

For the thumb and pinky I did two coats of Darling Diva Cougar followed by two coats of Darling Diva Pot o 'Gold. I added eyes on the thumb but now I think it was too much.
For the pointer finger I did something is saw at Kitty's Painted Claws. I just received Pumpkin Queen by Darling Diva (can you tell I love Darling Diva?!) so I added that over one coat of Essie Licorice, followed by a matte topcoat.
Middle and ring finger are OPI Alpine Snow with DDP Cougar and DDP Pot o 'Gold (middle) Essie Licorice (ring).

So this is my mani for Day Three. I couldn't stop staring at my thumb and pinky! Pot o'Gold is fantastic. It looks just like scales! The gold hexes are holo <3

Halloween NAC Day 2: Pumpkins & Jack O'Lanterns

Day two of the Halloween Nail Art Challenge!

Day two brings us Pumpkins and Jack O'Lanterns. I have so much love for pumpkins <3 We have one of those lights shown above at home. So I was pumped (ha!) to do a mani themed around them!

Pumpinks/Jack O 'Lanterns are orange. Orange is a colour most (normal?) people don't have in their stash. Every year, I 'realise' I don't have an orange polish and panic. Until I actually check my polishes. Ahem.
Oops. Seems I have no shortage of orange polishes ;-)

  • First, I drew circles with Essie Meet Me At Sunset on my nails.
  • Then I took my nail art brush and used OPI He's My Boo (Spookettes set) to make the circles into pumpkins.
  • Then I applied Rimmel Blue Vogue around the pumpkins to make it look like night.
  • Then I used l'Oréal Banana Pop, Essence Get The Fever and Essie Licorice to make it look like there was a light inside the pumpkins. I'm not entirely happy with the effect, but if you don't look so closely (for example if you just look at my nails in real life), it looks alright.
  • Finally I used a nail art brush to apply Miss Sporty Check Matte on top of the Blue Vogue, to give it that satin-y, velvet-y feel dark nights can have.

Yes, I purposely placed my watermark there to camouflage my cuticles ;-)

I really enjoyed this prompt! I'm a bit wary about the next prompt: Things that go BUMP in the night. Well, check back the day after tomorrow to see if I managed to come up with anything!

World Animal Day

Hi pretties! Did everyone have a good weekend? We went to a gaming exhibition kind of thing (mani to follow), had dinner with friends in a town between where they live and where we live, then ended the night with a pub quiz.

Last Friday was World Animal Day. I hope you were all extra nice to animals around you, maybe you even visited a shelter and/or donated some food or toys? Were you all rocking some cool animal-themed manis?

Here is my World Animal Day mani:
Yeah, the zebra kinda looked weird so I kept going back with my striper only to make it worse. I really liked the frog and tiger print though!

And here's a bonus picture of Ezio. Hey, if you're sick of him yet, just let me know.
He is very interested in our robot vacuum cleaner (Sammie). Here he is waiting until it's time to get vacuuming again. Honestly, this robot is a win-win. The house gets cleaner while I'm doing my nails (bye bye, guilty conscience) and the cat is entertained. I can only recommend it!

I used: Rimmel Aqua Cool, black striper, L'Oréal Colour Riche Banana Pop, Hema orange polish (no name), Rimmel Rain Rain Go Away. l'Oréal Color Riche 404 Scarlet Vamp, l'Oréal Color Riche 401 Rouge Pin up, Essie Licorice, nailgirls white polish, Miss Sporty Matte topcoat

I love love love this combo. It's Rimmel Rain, Rain Go Away, Miss Sporty Matte top coat, followed by striped Nails Inc Cambridge Terrace and Urban Decay Woodstock. Le sigh.

Baroque Stamping

If you've been checking this blog for a while, you know how stamping makes me feel. Inadequate. Envious. And all that. I still try to make myself think I can do anything as long as I work hard for it and practice, practice, practice. So have I given up stamping? No way Jose.

Here is my latest stamping adventure. A posh baroque design.
The l'Oréal polish stamped so well! I messed the mani up by leaving remover on the plate and then by adding the matte top coat too soon. Oh well.

Barok stamping
I had to take this picture at work so blurred the radiator in the background ;-)

As you can see, I suffered some askew stamping on the pinky finger and index.
The look was what I called 'zombie chic'. That just came to mind when I saw the colours combined and the design itself =)

OT: I'm a bit bummed because Vampirestat is back in my blog statistics =( I hadn't seen them since I added robots.txt but now they're back. Is anyone else seeing the return of referral spam like vampirestat on their blogs?

Golden camouflage

How dangerous are train delays?! With all those shops at railway stations, it's just too easy to spend money.
I had to wait half an hour the other day and found the drugstore at the station had reduced prices on l'Oréal and Maybelline polishes. I managed to ignore the Maybelline display but couldn't refuse a 50% off l'Oréal Color Riche Luxembourg Garden. I've since read it's supposed to be a dupe for Chanel Black Pearl? I don't have that one (have you seen the price label on it?) so I wouldn't know, but from swatches I'd say it looks pretty similar.

I found this pic by Tumblr user batsarequiet in Google cache:

batsarequiet.tumblr.com

I applied two coats, then used an eyeshadow applicator to sponge on a gold Miss Sporty polish. For the accent nail, I applied one coat of the lush The Man With The Golden Gun.
To even out the sponging, I applied one coat of Better Than Gel Look top coat by Essence. This was the result:

Even if it's not the same gold tint, I liked it a lot.

I used: L'Oréal Color Riche 608 Luxembourg Garden, Miss Sporty gold shimmer polish (no name), OPI The Man With The Golden Gun.

Floral One-Stroke

Hello pretties,

Florals. I never do them. I think I did flowers only once before. So this mani was long overdue =)

For Christmas my sister GA Suze got me Essie Head Mistress and Miss Fancy Pants. I wore Head Mistress for a day and I love it. You can never have enough reds <3 But, after a day, plain nails bore me so I needed to spice them up.

I don't know why, but I decided to add flowers. When I gathered my colours, I thought 'hey, why not try this one-stroke technique I read about a while back?'. Yeah. Big fail. But- I didn't feel the mani itself was a fail, so it's not a Nail Fail Friday.

Actually, this picture is true to life- my fingers are still quite tanned from the Egyptian sun.

1. So, I did this art on a 24hrs-old base (two coats) of Head Mistress.
2. Then I placed a drop of white polish on a sheet of plastic.
3. Right next to that, I placed a drop of dark blue polish.
4. I dragged my nail art brush through the middle, so either side would pick up one colour.
5. Then I gently made half circles on my nails, forming flowers. I quickly realised I was doing it wrong/it wasn't working out, but I liked the watercolour-like effect so I decided to continue.
6. I then added Miss Sporty Check Matte.
7. On top of that, I added yellow flower hearts and green leaves/stems. Which means those were shiny when the rest is matte =)
Like I said, I like how it turned out even though it wasn't what I was going for.

Since I had been experiencing some chipping before my vacation, I got Sally Hansen Hard as Nails this weekend. I'm very curious to see if it will improve my nails, as chipping is basically the only problem I have with them. Lucky me =)
I only have some major drama going on around my thumbnail right now, which is slowly healing with the help of creams, oils and overnight band aids.

I used: Essie Head Mistress, Rimmel Blue Vogue, Essence Stampy Polish White, Miss Sporty Check Matte, Cybele (green), Etos (yellow)

Gradient Nails: Sky

So I tried the gradient nails (I just loved the colour combo over at The Nailasaurus and used that tutorial) with a bit of white and pale blue. To be honest, I tried two shades of pink first but it was a mess.

Try to not see these babies!

Sorry about the small picture, it's just that it looks terrible up close! I got quite some compliments but I already have new polish on my nails as I was just too unsure.

I have found that cutting the sponges to fit your nails makes it easier, as I kept overestimating the length and then the gradient was too long :-( I'm excited to try this gradient thing again!

I used: Essence Stampy Polish white (base), Miss Sporty Et voilà! Nail tip whitener, Rimmel 420 Aqua Cool, Essence Gel Look topcoat

I See You

Here's lookin' at you
Every now and then, I think I have this amazing, unique idea and I just HAVE to do the mani RIGHT AWAY. Of course then I can't help but Google the mani and see dozens of people have also had the same amazing, unique idea.

The same thing happened with this mani. All of a sudden I thought 'an eye would be awesome here!' and started designing in my head (hey, I was at work). As soon as I got home I grabbed the colours and got painting. When I Googled 'eye nails' as my nails were drying, I saw quite some eye mani's, but luckily they were all done differently and none like mine. Yay!

I am not a great freehander. The iris bled a bit and I couldn't fix it. I tried but gave up because I didn't want to reach that point where you've ruined it and can only wipe the whole thing off. All in all I thought it looked quite cool :-)

I used: Miss Sporty Et voilà! Nail tip whitener, Essence Cool and the Gang, drug store brand black, Essence Quick Dry topcoat
